thesis
abstract

Evaluation of alternative electron donors for denitrifying moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs).

The effectiveness of four different electron donors, specifically methanol, ethanol, glycerol, and sulfide (added as Na(2)S), were evaluated in post-denitrifying bench-scale moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs). With the requirement for more wastewater treatment plants to reach effluent total nitrogen levels approaching 3 mg/L, alternative electron donors could promote more rapid MBBR startup/ac...

Biodegradation of Aromatic Amine Compounds Using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors

Three moving bed biofilm reactors were used to treat synthesized wastewater of aromatic amine compounds including aniline, para-diaminobenzene and para-aminophenol that are found in many industrial wastewaters. The reactors with cylindrical shape had an internal diameter and an effective depth of 10 and 60 cm, respectively. The reactors were filled with light expanded clay aggregate as carriers...

SUMMARY In order to decrease the risk of eutrophication in natural water bodies, the requirements for wastewater treatment plants' (WWTPs) discharge has become stricter than previously. Around 15-20% of the nitrogen load in the mainstream comes fro...

A novel approach for harnessing biofilm communities in moving bed biofilm reactors for industrial wastewater treatment

Moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) are an effective biotechnology for treating industrial wastewater. Biomass retention on moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) carriers (biofilm support materials), allows for the ease-of-operation and high treatment capacity of MBBR systems. Optimization of MBBR systems has largely focused on aspects of carrier design, while little attention has been paid to enha...
